FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Common questions about garage sizes, vehicle fit, and how Will It Park? works.
Garage Sizes
What is a standard 1-car garage size? +
A standard 1-car garage is typically 10–12 feet wide and 20–24 feet deep, with a door opening around 8–9 feet wide. This gives enough room for a compact or mid-size vehicle with minimal clearance on the sides. Use Will It Park to see exactly how much room your specific car will have.
What is a standard 2-car garage size? +
A standard 2-car garage is usually 18–20 feet wide and 20–24 feet deep. That said, a 20×22 garage can feel tight with two larger vehicles — especially full-size trucks or SUVs. Enter your exact garage dimensions into Will It Park to find out whether both cars will realistically fit.
What size garage do I need for a full-size truck? +
Most full-size trucks (F-150, Silverado, Ram 1500) run 19–20+ feet long and 6.6–7 feet wide without mirrors. You'll want a garage at least 22 feet deep and 12 feet wide for comfortable access. Extended or crew-cab long-bed configurations may need even more. Check your specific truck in Will It Park for exact clearances.
What is a standard garage door height? +
A standard single-car garage door is 7 feet tall. Some newer homes and garages built for trucks or SUVs have 8-foot doors. If you drive a lifted truck or a vehicle with a roof rack, pay close attention to door height — the vehicle might fit inside the garage but not clear the door opening. Will It Park lets you enter both door height and ceiling height separately.
Vehicle Fit
Will a Ford F-150 fit in a standard garage? +
It depends on the cab and bed configuration. A regular-cab short-bed F-150 is around 209 inches long — fine for a 22-foot garage. A SuperCrew long-bed stretches past 250 inches, which won't fit a 20-foot garage at all. Select your specific F-150 trim in Will It Park to get the real numbers.
Will a Toyota RAV4 fit in a 1-car garage? +
Yes, in most cases. The RAV4 is roughly 180 inches long and 73 inches wide — well within a standard 10×20 garage footprint. You'll have at least a foot of clearance on each side and a few feet front-to-back. Use Will It Park to confirm based on your exact garage dimensions.
Can I fit two cars in a 2-car garage? +
Two average-sized sedans or crossovers usually fit in a 20-foot-wide garage, but it can be tight getting in and out. If either vehicle is a truck, van, or large SUV, you may need a wider garage or be willing to maneuver carefully. Will It Park supports an "existing vehicles" option so you can account for cars already taking up space.
How much clearance do I need around my car? +
Most people want at least 30 inches of clearance on each side to open doors and walk around comfortably. Front-to-back, 18–24 inches is comfortable, though less is workable. Will It Park color-codes side clearances using door-opening thresholds: green means 30"+ (comfortable), yellow means 15–29" (tight but usable), and red means under 15" (too tight to get out). If side clearance is under 30", the result will show "IT FITS — BUT IT'S TIGHT" to flag the door clearance concern.
Will my truck fit with a lift kit? +
A lift kit can add 2–6 inches (or more) to your vehicle's height, which matters for both the garage door opening and the ceiling. The NHTSA dimensions reflect stock height only. If your truck is lifted, use the custom dimension entry in Will It Park to input your actual height after the lift and get accurate clearance numbers.
What about vehicles with roof racks or cargo boxes? +
Roof racks and cargo boxes can add 6–18 inches of height depending on the setup. Stock dimensions from the NHTSA database won't account for these. Measure your vehicle's total height with the rack or box installed, then use the manual dimension entry in Will It Park to check the fit with your actual measurements.
Mirrors & Dimensions
Should I account for side mirrors when measuring? +
Yes, especially in narrower garages. Side mirrors can add 6–12 inches or more to a vehicle's total width. Will It Park has a "include mirrors" toggle that adds the mirror width to the fit calculation so you can see how much space you'll actually have when pulling in.
Why are there two height fields (door height vs ceiling height)? +
Your garage door opening and your interior ceiling are usually different heights. The door height determines whether the vehicle can physically enter the garage, while the ceiling height affects overhead clearance once inside — especially relevant for taller vehicles, roof racks, or ceiling-mounted storage. Will It Park checks both so you get the full picture.
Where do the vehicle dimensions come from? +
Vehicle dimensions are sourced from the NHTSA vPIC API (the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's vehicle product information catalog). The API provides manufacturer-reported specifications for length, width, and height by year, make, and model.
How accurate are the measurements? +
The dimensions reflect manufacturer-reported specs from the NHTSA database, which are generally accurate for standard trims. Aftermarket modifications, lifted suspensions, oversized tires, or roof racks will affect real-world fit. Always take your own measurements before making any garage decisions.
